The Gift Of Literacy
Can you remember your first trip to the library? Maybe it was a school library. Maybe your parents walked you into your local library branch and signed you up for your first library card. I don't know about you, but I can remember feeling proud when I received my first library card. I felt like a 'big person'. It was the first document I ever had to sign. With my card, I knew that I could walk in my library and choose any book that I wanted to read. It was probably my first feeling of power.
So you can imagine how moved I was when I heard about the Camel Book Drive. If you haven't heard of it already, I'll try to explain how the operation works. It's very unique and exciting:
Donations of books are brought to semi-nomadic people of Kenya, close to the very unstable border of Somalia. These books are carried by camels, who travel and act as a mobile library - spreading literacy to the young and old.
If you've ever wanted to donate to a very noble cause but you weren't sure how - the Camel Book Drive is a unique opportunity to give the gift of literacy. Of course, this isn't your traditional gift idea. But think about it: your gift will travel across Kenya on the back of a camel - enriching the lives of others.
